The Scott College of Business strongly supports the Indiana DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) both locally and at state level. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.
The college annually hosts the 7th region’s DECA competition here at Indiana State University which brings together high school students from the area to compete in both written and interactive elements judged by industry professionals.
Dean Terry Daugherty said that “As a leading business school, the Scott College of Business at ISU believes that education doesn’t just happen in the classroom and DECA validates this perspective through curriculum, competitions, and activities that are designed to enhance experiential learning.  We pride ourselves on being student focused, which is why we remain committed to supporting our local high school business students as well as throughout the state of Indiana.”
This year for the first time the college served as the title sponsor for the state of Indiana DECA competition, which included more than 2,000+ students and high school business teachers held in Indianapolis. Stemming from the state competition, a few local students from South Vigo High School and North Vigo High School qualified for DECA’s International Career Development Conference held in Atlanta, GA, in April.
Scott College of Business Dean, Terry Daugherty, the college’s mentoring coordinator, Madison Marshall, several students, and Sycamore Sam were invited to attend both South and North Vigo High Schools’ DECA banquets in celebration of the achievements of these local students.
At the SVHS banquet on May 19, Dr. Daugherty and Madison presented the 15 international conference qualifiers with gifts for reaching this level of achievement. The NVHS banquet was held on May 24 and presentations were made for their 5 qualifying students.
“Qualifying for DECA’s International Conference is a prestigious accomplishment and it is amazing to have so many of our local Terre Haute students achieve this honor. We are fortunate in this region to have wonderful high school business teachers in Mrs. Gen Craft from SVHS, Mrs. Danielle Miller from NVHS, and Mr. Mike Richards from West Vigo High School (WVHS) who are dedicated to their students and passionate about business.” Said Dr. Daugherty.
Madison Marshall added that “As a Terre Haute South alum and DECA participant, it is an honor to give back, through mentorship and professional development experiences, to an organization that has provided me with more than I can begin to express. I am proud to work for a college that values supporting our community and look forward to continuing this partnership with the local and statewide DECA chapters.”
Two students from SVHS placed in the top 10 at DECA’s international conference in April which is an amazing feat considering they were competing against 18,000 from around the world and shows the commitment and talent of these high schoolers.
Landrie Flack and Micah Huckaby Micah Huckaby and Landrie Flack took first place in the Community Giving category of the 2022 Indiana DECA State Career Development Conference for their work promoting organ donation. As well as organizing several events, the pair has so far raised over $3,000 for the Indiana Donor Network and Donate Life Indiana.
Gracie Taylor and Kenzie Knowles from NVHS also had a great project.  They raised over $2,500 for Down Syndrome.
In recognition of their achievement, the college presented Landrie and Micah with a personalized plaque from the college for their outstanding business spirit.  We are especially proud of Landrie who will be a Sycamore business student starting this fall.
Dean Daugherty was so impressed with Landrie Flack’s achievement that he offered her a position on the Scott College of Business Dean’s Student Advisory Board, which normally does not include freshmen.
